Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)

For the production of plywood according to EN 636 from hardwood veneer.

Sustainability now plays a central role in all aspects of life. With so-called environmental product declarations - in short: EPDs - we can provide you with detailed information about the environmental impact of our products and thus make an important contribution to sustainability. The Institute Bauen und Umwelt e. V. (IBU) acts as the EPD program holder.

Frequently asked questions on the subject of environmental product declaration (EPD)

What is the basis of an EPD?

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is based on the international standards ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.

For which products was the EPD created?

Declared product/declared unit: 1m³ plywood made of hardwood veneer.

Plywood in the sense of this EPD are panel-shaped wood materials based on veneers of hardwood. The veneers are laid in such a way that their fiber direction is arranged (blocked off) at an angle of 90° to each other. They are glued together by means of thermosetting binders.

The requirements for plywood are defined according to EN 636 for general and load-bearing purposes for use in dry, wet or outdoor areas. Plywood made of hardwood veneer, normally compacted, can be used in construction, decorative interior / furniture construction and sports equipment, as a protective and storage material, for packaging, and in tool and vehicle construction. Plywood with higher density can be used in construction and for technical applications.

What is the global warming potential (GWP) resulting from the EPD?

For each cubic meter of average beech veneer plywood, around 340 kg of biogenic carbon is stored over the product lifetime.

In the case of complete oxidation, this corresponds to a CO2 equivalent of 1247 kg, which enters the product system in the course of raw material preparation (negative value in the GWP) and inevitably leaves it again at the end of the life cycle (positive value in the GWP). Over the entire product life cycle, the sum of the biogenic share of the global warming potential is therefore always zero.

The fossil greenhouse gas emissions for the production of the average beech veneer plywood amount to around 350 kg CO2 equivalent over the manufacturing phase (modules A1-A3).

Where can I find the EPD?
